Executive Summary

PAHs were first shown to cause cancer in the 1930’s. Since then scientists have been proclaiming that PAHs from burning fossil fuels and cigarette smoke will cause cancer, but to little avail. 

Consider cigarette smoking: With the 10+ year delay from exposure to PAHs to developing cancer, and the industry suppressing the science, it took many years to convince governments that PAHs in cigarette smoke were causing cancer. 

Most governments now have restrictions on man-made PAH emissions, but these need to be tightened and enforced. Unconventional gas mining has been banned in several European countries due to public protest over emissions causing health issues. In other countries (such as Australia and USA) the first cases of cancer, likely from PAHs emitted, are occurring now. 

Wildfire smoke is fast becoming the main source of PAHs in our daily lives. PAHs that cause cancer. The prospect of wildfire smoke causing cancer is increasing as worldwide wildfires increase. The catchcry “Climate change causes cancer” should be publicised to support immediate action against climate change. We need to act now.
