Effie spent over 30 years working as a molecular biologist in Cancer Research at University of Queensland and Queensland Institute of Medical Research, studying the effects of chemical carcinogens on cultured human cells.

Effie’s publications include papers in:
Nature, The Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, Mutation Research, Neurology, Oncogene, Biochemical Pharmacology and Plant Science.

Invited speaker at:
Dibble Cancer Research Centre, UDMS, London, and the International Congress for In Vitro Biology, Portland, OR, USA.

Why this Website?

“I worked with tiny (microgram) amounts of potent mutagens to change normal cells into cancer cells. In the PC2 laboratory, where I worked, these very dangerous chemicals were handled with protective clothing, in laminar flow hoods, and every microgram had to be accounted for and disposed of as “hazardous waste.

When Coal-Seam Gas Mining came to the Northern Rivers District of NSW where I live, I was appalled to find that each CSG “test well” was liberating kilogram amounts of PAHs into the air and underground water. So I decided to take a closer look at the scientific literature on these chemicals. This website is the result.”

This website is dedicated to Margaret Edlundh who died of cancer in 1991,
and Janet Ellis who died of cancer in 2021.

It has been developed with the help of some of my friends who are volunteering their time.
